PART 2: PRONUNCIATION
Dates, Months and Years
4 key rules for reading the date aloud:
Use ordinal numbers
Always use ordinals (numbers that show order) to say dates
1 = first, 2 = second, … , 31 = thirty-firstDate order by country
How the date is written or said differs by country…British English: ‘the’ + day + ‘of’ + month
15th February → the fifteenth of FebruaryAmerican English: month + day
February 15th → February fifteenth
Prepositions
Use in for months and years, e.g. I was born in 1996. I started my new job in June.
Use on for specific dates, e.g. Our next meeting is on 20th May.
Years
Follow these (sort of) simple rules:
Years | How to pronounce |
---|---|
1910 - 2000 | split into two parts* |
2000 | two thousand |
2001 - 2009 | two thousand and [number]** |
2010 onwards | both * and ** are acceptable |
