PART 2: PRONUNCIATION

Dates, Months and Years

4 key rules for reading the date aloud:

  1. Use ordinal numbers

    Always use ordinals (numbers that show order) to say dates
    1 = first, 2 = second, … , 31 = thirty-first

  2. Date order by country
    How the date is written or said differs by country…

    • British English: ‘the’ + day + ‘of’ + month
      15th February → the fifteenth of February

    • American English: month + day
      February 15th → February fifteenth

  3. Prepositions

    Use in for months and years, e.g. I was born in 1996. I started my new job in June.

    Use on for specific dates, e.g. Our next meeting is on 20th May.

  4. Years
    Follow these (sort of) simple rules:

Years
