Want to sound less awkward and more professional when guiding or taking part in discussions? Try these 5 phrases.

  1. move on to → shift from one topic to the next

  2. in terms of → focus on a specific point of the discussion

  3. how about → suggest an idea and invite input from others

  4. on that note → connect ideas

  5. to elaborate on → provide more detail about a previous point 

These phrases are also known as signpost language. Just like signposts in the street tell you where to go, these phrases guide your listeners through your discussion, helping them understand the structure and flow of your ideas.
