We find the best ways to learn English, so you don't have to

Welcome to October's Resource Roundup

In partnership with

Welcome to our Resource Roundup, Reader! Throughout the month, I collect a list of useful resources for learning English or working in tech and send out my latest finds in a special, once-a-month email.

You’ll hear from me again next Monday when we return to the usual mini lessons, and I’ll be sharing my most-used phrases for guiding meetings.

LEARNING TOOLS

Jobs and Career

Wellfound. Job site for tech startups with transparent job listings that specify salary ranges and equity options.

Code Academy. New to coding? I used this site to first learn Python. It has a good range of free courses for beginners that are interactive. Also, learning to code in English kills two birds with one stone!

Listening

Deep English. Improve your English by listening to engaging stories. You can adjust the audio speed by choosing between slow, normal or fast. It also provides a transcript and definitions of difficult words.

Criminal. A true crime podcast in American English. Episodes range between 30-45 minutes long. Great for english learners because the host, Phoebe Judge, has a neutral accent and very slow pace. Which episodes to begin with? Try ’48 hours’, ‘Money Tree’ or ‘911’.

Reading

Readwise. This tool collects and organises highlights from things you read online. Excellent for learning new vocabulary especially using their ‘spaced repetition’ system which reminds users to review key points.

Newsletters. We’ve got you covered for learning English, but we recommend getting into the habit of reading other newsletters relevant to your field such as marketing or finance. If you’re in software, we can recommend The Growing Engineer.
